Station check

Does each station agree with satellite-based estimates?

We compare every eligible station's monthly PM2.5 with the range expected from satellite-based estimates for its location. A station gets a verdict only when 8 or more of its last 12 checked months fall on one side of that range. It describes the numbers, not anyone's intent.

Stations with a verdict other than "agrees"

Each page shows the months behind the verdict and the reasons a station can differ. Questions about a station: hello@abhijitvaidya.in.

How the check works

  1. For each station with 4 or more good years between 2016 and 2019, we learn how its monthly PM2.5 normally relates to the satellite estimate for its 1 km square.
  2. From that baseline we draw an 80% range for every later month.
  3. A verdict needs 8 of the last 12 checked months above or below the range. On held-out years this rule raised a false alarm for 1 to 2% of stations.
  4. Newer stations are compared with checked stations 25 to 50 km away, with no verdict.
